A 21-year-old man identified as Nasire Best fired multiple shots at a U.S. Secret Service checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening, according to law enforcement officials.
Best died after being shot by Secret Service officers. President Trump was inside the White House at the time and remained unharmed.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Eastern Time near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the White House security perimeter. Best, armed with a pistol, fired approximately three shots toward the White House before U.S. Secret Service personnel returned fire and neutralized him.
A lockdown was lifted around 7:30 p.m. Eastern after the immediate threat was contained. A nearby civilian was also shot during the exchange; however, the suspect died and no Secret Service personnel were injured.
Best had a documented history of misconduct at White House checkpoints. District of Columbia records indicate he was arrested in July 2025 for attempting to enter a White House checkpoint without authorization, refusing commands to stop, claiming he was Jesus Christ, and stating he wanted to be arrested. A pretrial stay-away order was issued following that incident, but Best later failed to appear for a hearing, resulting in a bench warrant.
This shooting marks the third instance of gunfire near President Trump in approximately one month. Previous incidents occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April and near the Washington Monument on May 4.
The FBI confirmed it was immediately on the ground after the incident. The Secret Service released a preliminary statement shortly after the lockdown was lifted, noting President Trump remained unharmed.
