New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral election, citing shared priorities on safety, affordability, and resisting far-right influence. In an op-ed for The New York Times, Hochul acknowledged disagreements with Mamdani but emphasized his commitment to “a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods” and “opportunity is within reach for every family.” She highlighted their discussions on policing, combating antisemitism, and economic challenges, stressing that the city’s next mayor must “not surrender one inch to Donald Trump.”
Hochul’s endorsement follows months of pressure from progressive Democrats and coincides with President Trump’s vocal opposition. The former president criticized Hochul for backing Mamdani, labeling him a “‘Liddle’ Communist” and warning the decision is “a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City.” Trump also suggested Mamdani’s victory would represent a “rebellion,” despite recent polls showing the candidate trailing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by double digits.
Hochul, who is seeking re-election as New York’s governor, has faced scrutiny over her alignment with Mamdani’s policies, including affordability measures requiring legislative support. Meanwhile, Trump’s administration reportedly offered Cuomo a role in the federal government to withdraw from the race, though Cuomo has not stepped aside. Hochul’s endorsement underscores deepening partisan divisions as the mayoral contest intensifies.
