Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins is considering a run for governor, potentially challenging Trump-endorsed Rep. Byron Donalds in the GOP primary. Collins, a former state senator and Green Beret, told the Orlando Sentinel he is “in the final stages” of deciding whether to enter the race, with his family’s support. He hinted at pairing with Casey DeSantis, wife of Gov. Ron DeSantis, though she has not publicly announced her own political plans.

Collins, appointed lieutenant governor last month after Jeanette Nuñez stepped down, has positioned himself as a key ally to DeSantis, who recently dubbed him the “Chuck Norris of Florida politics.” Collins emphasized his commitment to maintaining Florida’s conservative policies, stating, “We can’t afford to let Florida slip back to being a purple state.”

The potential race intensifies as Donalds, backed by Trump and raising over $26 million, remains a strong contender. Collins, who has received “positive feedback” about a bid, stressed he would only enter if he believes his approach is best for the state. He added that family support and careful deliberation will guide his decision, with a possible announcement as early as October or November.
