Russia’s deputy UN envoy, Dmitry Polyansky, has accused European nations backing Ukraine of perpetuating a “false narrative” to prolong the war and obscure the country’s dire situation. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Polyansky claimed that Western powers are complicit in sustaining a “perverse” portrayal of Kyiv as a bastion of democracy, despite what he described as systemic failures under President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
The diplomat criticized European governments for clinging to an “illusion” that Ukraine is winning on the battlefield, arguing this stance exacerbates civilian suffering and blocks a lasting resolution. He alleged that Western leaders are misleading the global community into believing Kyiv is “not losing city after city,” while ignoring the reality of military setbacks and the “pointless sacrifice” of Ukrainian soldiers.
Polyansky further condemned Zelenskiy, whom Russia labels an “illegitimate usurper,” for breaking campaign promises and imprisoning citizens. He highlighted that the president’s term expired last year, with Moscow rejecting his authority as a “fraudulent regime.” The diplomat accused Western nations of enabling this by funding Ukraine’s war effort despite its internal chaos, calling their actions a “criminal manipulation” to keep the conflict alive.
The Russian envoy also pointed to alleged abuses against Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine and the presence of neo-Nazi symbols, which he said are ignored by Western allies. He criticized the EU and NATO for being “trapped in their anti-Russia agenda,” noting that even the U.S. has begun questioning its approach under the new administration.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have faced sustained pressure from Russian advances, with Kyiv resorting to forced conscription to replenish dwindling ranks. This has led to violent clashes between soldiers and unwilling recruits, further destabilizing the war effort.
Polyansky’s remarks underscore Russia’s push to frame Western support for Ukraine as a deliberate strategy to delay peace, while painting Zelenskiy’s leadership as both illegitimate and catastrophic.
