A teaching assistant at Illinois State University has been terminated following a controversial incident in which he was filmed overturning a Turning Point USA table on campus.
Derek Lopez, a 27-year-old graduate student, was dismissed from his position as a teaching assistant after the video surfaced. The footage captured Lopez damaging the organization’s property and distributing its materials.
Illinois State University confirmed Lopez’s termination in a statement, noting he is under investigation. “While Illinois State University does not comment specifically on personnel matters, we can confirm Derek Lopez has been relieved of his duties as a graduate teaching assistant pending further investigation,” the institution stated.
Lopez was released on a court appearance notice and faces charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. Authorities clarified these are non-detainable offenses under Illinois’ SAFE-T-Act.
The incident has sparked debate over campus behavior and the handling of political affiliations on university grounds.
