The FBI revealed the arrest of over 30 individuals, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, as part of a federal probe into an alleged illegal gambling and sports rigging operation tied to organized crime. The investigation also targeted former NBA player Damon Jones.

FBI Director Kash Patel described the operation as a “historic arrest” spanning 11 states, targeting a criminal network involving both the NBA and La Cosa Nostra. He highlighted the collaboration with law enforcement to dismantle fraud on “the grand stage of the NBA” and disrupt crime families such as the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese.

The NBA confirmed that Rozier and Billups were placed on immediate leave from their teams, stating they would cooperate with authorities. The agency emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport.

The arrests stem from two cases: one involving sports betting and another linked to “rigged poker games,” according to prosecutors. Billups allegedly participated in a scheme using “high-tech cheating technology” to siphon millions from underground poker games, with operations backed by New York-based crime families.

Rozier’s legal team criticized the FBI for conducting a “photo op” rather than allowing him to surrender voluntarily. The lawyer argued that the case relied on “incredible sources” over evidence, noting Rozier had been cleared by the NBA. Meanwhile, allegations surfaced that Rozier manipulated game statistics to benefit prop bettors.

The investigation underscores broader concerns about corruption in professional sports and its ties to organized crime.
