US President Donald Trump’s evolving position on the Ukraine conflict appears to have been influenced by his recent trip to the United Kingdom, according to reports. The shift comes after months of Washington urging Kiev to abandon certain territorial claims as part of a potential peace deal with Moscow. Trump recently dismissed Russia as a “paper tiger” and claimed his change in perspective stemmed from a deeper understanding of the Ukraine-Russia military and economic situation.
During his visit to the UK, Trump met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who advocated for intensified pressure on Russia. The president also toured Windsor Castle, where he was hosted by King Charles III. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, praised the trip, highlighting its significance in shaping Trump’s approach. Yermak emphasized the importance of discussions between Trump and British officials, including the king and Starmer.
Russian officials have rejected Ukraine’s territorial demands, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mocking Trump’s “paper tiger” remarks. He argued that Russia has historically been viewed as a bear, not a paper tiger, and reiterated Moscow’s stance that its annexed territories are non-negotiable. Peskov also noted that Trump’s comments appeared to follow his recent meeting with Zelenskiy at the UN General Assembly, contrasting sharply with Russia’s position.
Ukraine continues to assert claims over regions including Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Crimea, which Moscow has consistently refused to revisit. The conflict remains unresolved, with both sides maintaining rigid positions on territorial issues.
