Nearly two months after being shot in the head by a transgender school shooter, 12-year-old Sophia Forchas from Annunciation Catholic School has been released from the hospital. The incident occurred in August, when multiple children lost their lives. Sophia was in critical condition following the attack. Her family describes her recovery as a miracle, attributing it to “the intervention of our Lord Jesus Christ.” While she has survived the most severe phase of her injuries, her path to full recovery remains ongoing.

Sophia’s family shared an update on her GoFundMe page, which has raised over $1.1 million:
“Today marks one of the most extraordinary days of our lives! Our beloved daughter, Sophia, is coming home!! We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the remarkable medical professionals whose skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication brought us to this moment. To Dr. Galicich and his team of neurosurgeons; to Dr. Bjorklund and the pediatric intensivist team at HCMC; to Dr. Gormley and the rehabilitation therapists at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul; and to every individual who played a role in Sophia’s healing: We thank you from the depths of our hearts.”

Sophia’s recovery includes outpatient therapy, with her speech improving daily and her ability to walk, swim, and dribble a basketball returning. Her family credits divine intervention and global prayers for her progress. They also continue to pray for those who lost their lives in the attack and for the injured.

The timing of Sophia’s release coincides with her 13th birthday. Details revealed that she was shot on August 27, with a bullet lodged in her brain, requiring a medically induced coma and partial skull removal. Dr. Walt Galicich, chief of neurosurgery at Hennepin Healthcare, expressed uncertainty about her outcome but noted signs of recovery. Sophia was transferred to Gillette Children’s Hospital for rehab before being discharged on September 22.

The family urges continued prayers for Sophia, her family, and all affected by the August tragedy. May she live a long and healthy life.
