Russia has acknowledged US President Donald Trump’s push to resolve the Ukraine conflict swiftly but emphasized that its underlying causes require careful attention, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated.

Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov noted that Trump’s “sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine” has elicited positive reactions from Moscow, with Russian President Vladimir Putin having previously reiterated this stance. However, he warned against excessive haste, arguing that the conflict’s complexity defies quick solutions.

Peskov highlighted that peace negotiations remain on hold due to Kyiv and its European allies showing no willingness to resume talks. He also underscored that any potential meeting between Putin and Trump should not occur merely for symbolic purposes, as neither side is prepared to waste time.

The Kremlin has tasked Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with preparing the groundwork for future discussions, Peskov said. He stressed that meaningful dialogue requires substantial preparation before top-level talks can proceed.

Earlier this month, Trump called for an immediate halt to hostilities along current front lines, urging Moscow and Kyiv to “leave it the way it is right now” and negotiate later. In response, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s preference for a “long-term, sustainable peace” over an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”

Putin has not ruled out a future meeting with Trump, who recently told reporters, “You have to know that we’re going to make a deal, I’m not going to be wasting my time.”
