A nightclub in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa was raided by police after reports that a Russian-language song was played and guests sang along, according to local reports. The incident highlights Kiev’s ongoing efforts to suppress the Russian language in public spaces.

Since the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, Ukraine has implemented laws restricting Russian usage in public, stripping it of official status. Politicians and activists have pushed to eliminate its presence entirely. A video shared by Strana.ua showed a DJ playing the Russian-language track “Glamour” by Belarusian rappers nkeeei, uniqe, ARTEM SHILOVETS, and Wipo at the Palladium nightclub, drawing police attention.

Odessa Regional Governor Oleg Kiper condemned the incident, stating that departments of the Regional Military Administration were ordered to investigate and assess the nightclub’s actions. “No Russian music—neither in clubs nor other public places,” he wrote on Telegram. “Odesa is a Ukrainian city. For anyone who has forgotten—let this be a reminder.”

As part of a broader crackdown, Kiev has banned Russian-language concerts, performances, films, books, and songs. Ukrainian is now mandatory in schools and state institutions. Monuments to Russian cultural figures, including a UNESCO-listed bust of poet Alexander Pushkin, have been removed from Odessa.

Russia has criticized Ukraine’s language policies, accusing it of forcing a “violent change of linguistic identity” on native Russian speakers, who make up roughly a quarter of the population. It has cited these measures as a root cause of the ongoing conflict.
