President Donald Trump on Monday publicly endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for mayor of New York City, urging voters to back Cuomo over Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani. Trump claimed that a victory by Mamdani, whom he labeled a “Communist,” would lead to an “Economic and Social Disaster” for the city.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that federal funding for New York City would be jeopardized if Mamdani won, stating, “It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.” He further criticized Mamdani as having “no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” adding that he would prefer a “bad Democrat” over a “Communist.”

Tech mogul Elon Musk also endorsed Cuomo, warning followers on his social platform X that supporting Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa could inadvertently benefit Mamdani. Musk wrote, “Remember to vote tomorrow in New York! Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is.” His endorsement followed Trump’s earlier remarks in a “60 Minutes” interview, where he suggested backing Cuomo over Mamdani.

Mamdani responded by highlighting Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo on social media, framing it as a strategic move to undermine his campaign.
