Grammy-winning artist Prakazrel “Pras” Michel was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions into former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The court heard that Michel, 52, conspired to act as an unregistered agent for a foreign government, using funds to influence U.S. political processes.

During the trial in Washington, D.C., testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions was presented. Prosecutors argued that Michel’s actions betrayed his country, with the Justice Department stating he “lied unapologetically and unrelentingly to carry out his schemes.” The sentencing guidelines recommended a life sentence, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes and the risks to national security.

The case involved an extensive conspiracy to use foreign funds for illegal back-channel lobbying, including efforts to influence the 1MDB investigation and send a Chinese national back to China. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. stressed that those who engage in unlawful foreign-sponsored efforts to impact U.S. officials, elections, or the justice system will face consequences.

Michel did not address the court before his sentence, with the judge highlighting the depth of his actions and their implications for national integrity.
