According to reports, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy is considering a 2028 Senate campaign against Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), despite the upcoming race for Senator Dan Sullivan’s seat. A source revealed that Dunleavy has no plans to resign during his current term. Murkowski, known for her conflicts with former President Donald Trump, previously stated she could not support him.
Dunleavy, described as deeply committed to Alaska’s success, reportedly joked about preferring the Arctic’s natural beauty over Washington’s “concrete” environment. However, he acknowledges the necessity of being in Washington to achieve results. The governor, who was among the first to endorse Trump in 2016, maintains close ties with the administration despite a 3,500-mile distance. A White House official noted Dunleavy visits more than any other governor.
Trump has reportedly encouraged Dunleavy to run, with the governor present at a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in August. Murkowski has not yet confirmed her re-election plans for 2028, stating she prioritizes Alaskans’ interests over electoral ambitions. She also declined to rule out a gubernatorial bid but humorously acknowledged the frequent inquiries about her political future.
