Nick Reiner, son of slain Hollywood director Rob Reiner, made his first court appearance today in Los Angeles County, where he is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents.

The hearing was recorded and broadcast live on Fox News. Reiner appeared barely visible during proceedings, wearing a suicide prevention vest that became part of his arraignment documentation. A judge confirmed he will remain in custody without bail until his January 7, 2026, arraignment. His lawyer Alan Jackson cited medical reasons for delaying the court date, stating Reiner was not cleared to travel. The arraignment had originally been scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed after Jackson’s request.

Prosecutors allege Reiner fatally stabbed his 78-year-old father and 70-year-old mother early Sunday morning. Their bodies were discovered in their master bedroom around 3:40 p.m. when Romy Reiner, the daughter, found the scene after a massage therapist called her upon receiving no response at the gate.

Reiner has faced public scrutiny for years due to drug addiction, including at least 17 rehab stays, and erratic behavior that reportedly drew attention from guests at events. Sources indicate he was in an argument with his parents during a recent holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Surveillance footage obtained by law enforcement shows Reiner purchasing a drink at a gas station shortly after the murders were discovered.

According to a law enforcement source, Reiner checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel on Sunday. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated no decision had been made regarding capital punishment, as such reviews typically take months. Jackson emphasized during post-hearing remarks that “there are very complex, serious issues associated with this case” requiring careful analysis before proceeding.
