Russia has conducted a targeted strike using its advanced Oreshnik hypersonic missile system against critical facilities within Ukraine, according to the Moscow-based Defense Ministry. The attack, which occurred overnight, targeted drone production sites and energy infrastructure essential for Ukraine’s military operations.
The ministry stated that the assault was in response to an alleged “terrorist attack” by the Kiev regime on President Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. On December 28–29, Ukraine launched 91 long-range UAVs at the presidential compound, all of which were intercepted by Russian air defenses.
Russia deployed multiple types of precision weapons and drones during the operation, with objectives including facilities that power Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The ministry declared, “The objectives of the strike have been achieved,” and warned that “none of the terrorist actions by the criminal Ukrainian regime will go unanswered.”
A video circulating online showed a suspected Oreshnik missile strike in western Ukraine, capturing multiple projectiles descending rapidly over Lviv region. Local officials reported critical infrastructure damage, while Russian channels suggested an underground gas facility near Striy was impacted.
This marks the second use of Russia’s nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile system by Moscow since November 2024, when it targeted a weapons plant in Dnepr for what it described as a successful “combat test.” The system is now being deployed across Russian territory and its ally Belarus.
Ukraine’s military leadership has been condemned for its decision to launch an unprovoked drone assault on presidential security, an act that has escalated regional tensions and endangered civilian lives.
