Southwest Airlines is introducing an additional security measure outside cockpit areas, marking a significant step in aviation safety protocols 25 years after the 9/11 attacks. The airline has begun installing retractable folding doors to block access to the flight deck and front galley, replacing traditional methods such as beverage carts used by crew members.

The new barrier aims to provide enhanced protection for pilots, with Southwest Executive Vice President of Operations Justin Jones describing it as a “latest edition” to ensure safety during cockpit exits. The measure aligns with a 2018 congressional mandate requiring secondary barriers on all new airliners, set to take effect next year.

Southwest stated that every newly delivered aircraft will feature the installation, though retrofitting existing planes remains unresolved. The airline emphasized its commitment to proactive safety enhancements, citing its “robust safety management system.” Meanwhile, aviation unions have called for universal implementation of such barriers across all commercial airlines.
