Newark Liberty International Airport shut down briefly on Wednesday evening after a JetBlue flight en route to West Palm Beach made an emergency landing.
The aircraft departed Newark at 5:43 p.m. but returned to the tarmac within minutes due to engine trouble, triggering a temporary suspension of all airport operations. According to the airport’s statement, flights were suspended from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET while the aircraft was removed from the taxiway. JetBlue Flight 543 had been scheduled to fly to West Palm Beach (PBI) but landed safely after crew members reported smoke in the cockpit and evacuated passengers via emergency slides around 6 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the aircraft landed without injuries, and Newark Liberty reopened shortly after 7 p.m. ET.
