The U.S. Park Police have launched an investigation into a coded threat against President Trump discovered inside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The message, written as “86 47,” has been identified by authorities as a reference to eliminating the 47th president.
The vandalism was reported at approximately 7:20 a.m. when the National Park Service notified law enforcement of the incident. The graffiti covered an area measuring roughly 15 by 30 feet and featured the numbers prominently painted on the reflecting pool’s surface.
A U.S. Park Police spokesperson described the act as “unacceptable” and confirmed that cleanup efforts are underway while the affected area is secured. Authorities state an active investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for the vandalism.
The phrase “86 47” has been interpreted by some as a threat against President Trump, with “86” being slang for removing something from a menu or eliminating it and “47” referring to his presidency. This incident follows shortly after former FBI Director James Comey surrendered to federal authorities on charges of threatening the president’s life.
Comey was charged following an image he posted online that depicted seashells spelling out “86 47.” He deleted the post immediately, apologized for any confusion, and stated he did not realize the numbers could be associated with violence. Comey later acknowledged he did not understand the message’s violent implication.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is currently undergoing renovation, and construction crews have been working to restore the historic site.
