A father in Garland, Texas, used his legally owned firearm to stop a carjacker who targeted his family in a parking lot near Highway 66 and Dairy Road.

The suspect had previously smashed into two other vehicles and was attempting to force entry into multiple cars before focusing on a white Chevrolet Impala containing the father, several children, and two adult women. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic male.

According to police reports, the father drew his legally owned gun and fired more than 10 shots at the suspect, who later died in a hospital. All passengers in the vehicle escaped uninjured. The father remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and turned over his weapon to officers.

Taylor Stanfield, a resident of Garland for 13 years who witnessed the aftermath, expressed concern: “It’s definitely very concerning,” he said. “My kids are playing outside all the time, my wife is out there with them, and if somebody like this were able to drive away in that vehicle, who knows what could have happened.”

Police confirmed the investigation remains ongoing and no charges have been filed as of publication.
