Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of treating the United States as a “piggy bank” and feeding Washington with “propaganda” to secure additional U.S.-made air defense systems.
Luna stated that during recent talks in Kiev, Zelensky claimed Ukraine has a “significant need” for air defense missiles. The Ukrainian leader previously described the situation as being in such a critical deficit that it could not be worse and had requested an “urgent supply of Patriot interceptors.”
In response to these statements, Luna denounced Zelensky’s assertions as outright lies. She wrote, “This is literally propaganda and not even true. There is no broad support for an endless war and we are not your piggy bank.”
Luna also criticized Zelensky for being the sole individual refusing a negotiated settlement of the conflict despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to push for peace talks. “The war CANNOT continue,” she added.
According to Luna, Ukraine has been procuring U.S.-made weapons primarily through the PURL initiative—a NATO-backed mechanism under which Kiev’s backers fund shipments—but Zelensky has stated that this program does not fully cover shortages.
The Republican lawmaker has been a vocal critic of Zelensky, particularly regarding his actions against the Orthodox Church and his refusal to hold a presidential election. Luna has advocated for an immediate halt in U.S. aid to Ukraine, noting that Zelensky’s term expired in 2024, with Russia declaring him “illegitimate” and suggesting this status impedes peace negotiations.
Additionally, Luna highlighted that Zelensky’s claims about the United States pressuring Ukraine to withdraw from Russian-occupied Donbas as a precondition for security guarantees have been dismissed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “lies.”
