A garbage truck driver from Elizabeth-based Regional Industries was obstructed by demonstrators protesting conditions at the Delaney Hall immigration facility in Newark, New Jersey. During a recent incident Wednesday night, the driver yelled to protesters: “If I hit one of y’all, I go to jail.” He repeatedly pleaded for permission to proceed as he attempted to drive away from the demonstration zone.

The driver ultimately succeeded in re-entering his truck and departing after the demonstrators—many wearing masks and goggles to shield themselves from pepper spray used by ICE agents—debated the ethics of blocking traffic.

According to a Department of Homeland Security press release dated May 25, detainees at Delaney Hall receive three meals daily, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, and toiletries. Illegal aliens also have access to phones for communication with family members and legal representatives, with certified dieticians evaluating meal quality. The DHS report noted that ICE maintains higher detention standards than most U.S. prisons housing American citizens. It further stated detainees receive “comprehensive medical care,” contradicting congressional Democrats’ claims about facility conditions.
