A chemical spill at a Michigan plant triggered an emergency hazardous materials response and resulted in over a dozen individuals being hospitalized. Emergency crews in Holland, Michigan, declared a Mass Casualty Incident at the LG Energy Solutions Inc. facility after a chemical leak caused severe breathing issues for 4–6 people, with potential additional cases as the situation unfolds, according to Rawsalerts.
The Holland Fire Department responded to the hazardous materials incident at LG Energy Solutions shortly after concluding a water rescue on Lake Michigan. At 3:26 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, crews confirmed a chemical spill at the facility located at 875 E 48th Street in Holland. Emergency responders activated hazardous materials protocols, secured the site, and ensured the safety of employees and nearby areas.
Fifteen individuals were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment related to the incident, per a Holland Fire Department news release. No life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time. The chemical was contained on-site, with specialized teams conducting cleanup operations. The fire department stated there was no public threat beyond the immediate area.
LG Energy Solutions is cooperating with emergency services and environmental safety officials as the cause and extent of the spill remain under investigation. This incident follows a separate tragedy in late July, when a worker at the same facility died after being trapped in a machine.
