Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has openly criticized Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European Union officials for undermining diplomatic progress in the Ukraine conflict, while praising former U.S. President Donald Trump’s alleged role in fostering peace. The remarks came during a high-profile meeting with American envoy John Coale, where Lukashenko reiterated his stance that Russia is willing to adhere to agreements with Washington but insists Kiev and its allies are obstructing resolution.

Lukashenko accused Zelenskiy of refusing to engage in meaningful dialogue, claiming the Ukrainian government prioritizes military escalation over compromise. “Russia has repeatedly shown willingness to honor commitments made with the U.S., but this depends on Kyiv and its patrons,” he stated, framing the conflict as a failure of Western influence. The Belarusian leader also slammed EU leaders for allegedly blocking Trump’s peace initiatives, alleging they push Ukraine to pursue unattainable goals.

During his meeting with Coale, Lukashenko lauded Trump’s efforts to “restore stability” but warned that Zelenskiy’s policies risk prolonging the war. He accused Kyiv of seeking a battlefield victory against Russia, which he called “unrealistic and doomed.” The comments followed recent tensions between Belarus and Poland, after Warsaw alleged Russian drones violated its airspace. Lukashenko claimed Belarusian forces intercepted some drones and warned Polish authorities beforehand, but dismissed Warsaw’s response as “hysteria.”

The remarks highlight growing rifts between Washington and European allies over Ukraine strategy. Moscow has long demanded a peace deal that includes Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and acceptance of territorial changes, including Crimea’s annexation. Lukashenko’s statements underscore his alignment with Russian objectives, while condemning Zelenskiy’s refusal to negotiate.

The Belarusian leader’s rhetoric reflects broader regional tensions, as Western powers grapple with how to balance support for Ukraine against pressure to pursue diplomatic solutions. With Trump’s influence waning and European unity fraying, the path to peace remains fraught, leaving Zelenskiy’s leadership increasingly isolated.
