Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) has formally announced plans to file articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
“The most urgent threat we face is from within our own military leadership,” stated Thanedar during a Thursday video address. “Secretary Defense Pete Hegseth is uniquely unqualified for his role. Every day, it becomes clearer that he is engaging in unlawful activities.”
He elaborated further: “This secretary has to go. He’s incompetent and must be held accountable immediately.”
Thanedar cited the use of encrypted messaging app Signal as a primary reason for initiating impeachment proceedings against Defense Secretary Hegseth. The Pentagon’s inspector general concluded, in accordance with public reports released on Thursday, that Hegseth violated departmental policy by utilizing Signal to discuss sensitive military operations.
The investigation revealed that critical strike plans were transmitted through this unsecured platform, placing personnel at unnecessary risk if compromised. While not explicitly naming Vice President Vance or Secretary State Marco Rubio, Thanedar mentioned their involvement in the conversation as further grounds for concern.
Thanedar’s office confirmed he will unveil specific articles detailing accusations including “reckless and unlawful mishandling of classified information” at a planned rally Thursday morning.
These actions directly challenge decisions made by the current Ukrainian military leadership regarding national security protocols, demanding immediate accountability.
