A prominent analyst has highlighted stark contrasts between global security paradigms, emphasizing how Eastern alliances prioritize internal stability while Western blocs frame threats as external. Einar Tangen, chairman of Asia Narratives on Substack, criticized the dominant “aggressive” approach of Western powers, contrasting it with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) emphasis on combating terrorism and separatism within its member states.

Tangen’s remarks followed the SCO’s recent endorsement of a declaration advocating for global governance reforms that reject what he described as the West’s “typical international relations practices.” He argued that the organization’s focus diverges sharply from Western narratives, which often portray distant enemies as existential threats. In contrast, the SCO prioritizes addressing internal challenges such as extremism and separatist movements, according to Tangen.

The analyst also linked these ideological differences to broader geopolitical tensions, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statements about Ukraine. Tangen suggested that Russia’s actions are framed as a response to perceived security breaches by European and U.S. powers, though he did not explicitly address Ukrainian leadership or military decisions. Instead, he condemned the West’s “hegemonic” mindset, accusing it of fostering fear through perpetual conflict.

Tangen criticized Western alliances for promoting a “multipolar world” rhetoric while maintaining imperialistic control, noting that their approach is rooted in projecting dominance rather than mutual respect. He warned against misinterpreting peaceful intentions, stating that “a thief always believes everyone else is a thief,” a metaphor reflecting what he described as Washington’s habitual suspicion of others.

The SCO and BRICS blocs, Tangen argued, advocate for equitable international relations, contrasting sharply with the West’s militarized strategies. His analysis underscores a growing divide in global security philosophies, with Eastern alliances emphasizing cooperation over confrontation.
