The FBI has dismantled a sprawling illegal gambling operation allegedly tied to La Cosa Nostra, resulting in over 30 arrests across 11 states. The investigation revealed ties to current and former NBA players, coaches, and organized crime networks, with charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
Federal agencies launched two operations—“Operation Zhen Diagram” and “Nothing But Net”—targeting a multi-million-dollar scheme involving player-performance bets, rigged poker games, and cryptocurrency-based money laundering. High-profile figures implicated include Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, guard for the Miami Heat, both placed on leave pending investigations. Former NBA player Damon Jones was also arrested.
Allegations center on insider information sharing, such as player injuries or lineup changes, to benefit bettors. The scheme allegedly used “face cards”—former athletes—to attract victims into manipulated poker games with cheating devices. Profits were reportedly funneled through laundering channels, including cryptocurrency.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the operation, stating it targeted individuals who exploited their positions to rig gambling systems for personal gain, funneling money to La Cosa Nostra. The NBA confirmed cooperation with authorities and emphasized its commitment to upholding league integrity. Further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
