Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back, has died at the age of 36. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced his passing Saturday morning, describing it as a “great sadness.” Martin spent seven seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Buccaneers, where he became a fan favorite during his early career.
“From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise,” the team stated. Martin, known for his “bruiser” style and nickname “Muscle Hamster,” accumulated 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns over his career. His rookie year in 2012 saw him rush for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection.
A first-round pick (No. 31) in 2012, Martin was recognized as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time. He also played for the Raiders before retiring after sustaining injuries. His collegiate career at Boise State included 3,431 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, ranking third in school history.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed. Martin’s family and the Buccaneers expressed condolences, honoring his legacy as a “fan favorite” and “man who’s gone too soon.”
