The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office introduced a self-driving police vehicle equipped with advanced technology, marking a significant step in law enforcement innovation. The autonomous patrol unit, named “PUG” (Police Unmanned Ground), is the first of its kind in the United States.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz highlighted the device’s potential during its debut, stating, “It’s a game-changer for us. It allows us to engage with our community in ways we’ve never done before and sets a precedent for the future of policing.” The vehicle, donated by Policing Lab, features 360-degree cameras, license plate readers, audio sensors, thermal imaging, and drone deployment capabilities.
According to Edward Prokop of Policing Lab, the PUG can assist in locating individuals hiding in restricted areas or elevated positions. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the unit will initially operate with a deputy onboard for the first year, allowing community feedback before transitioning to full autonomy.
Cordero-Stutz explained the vehicle’s role in critical situations, such as active shootings, where it could deploy a drone for real-time aerial surveillance. However, the PUG will not be used in high-speed chases or on highways due to speed limitations. The sheriff’s office plans to showcase the unit at community events through October before commencing patrols later in the year.
The initiative aims to enhance public safety and foster trust through technological advancement, with the sheriff’s office positioning Miami-Dade as a leader in innovative law enforcement practices.
