Amid attention surrounding a recent Somalian fraud scandal in Minneapolis, video from the city’s community events has gone viral after showing the mayor attempting to try an authentic Somali dish.
During what appeared to be an event promoting unity amid ongoing discussions about immigration, Mayor Jacob Frey was captured trying Ambulo, a traditional Somali stew. The footage shows him visibly struggling with the taste as he pushes food around his plate in an effort that resembles how children might avoid finishing their vegetables.
Ambulo is traditionally prepared by soaking beans and grains overnight before boiling them together until soft to create a thick, porridge-like consistency. It’s typically eaten communally from a shared bowl using spoons or hands.
While the event aimed to show solidarity, the mayor’s reaction raises questions about authenticity in community engagement.
