A Montana jury has convicted Daren Christopher Abbey of murder after a brutal attack at a campsite near Big Sky, Montana, where the victim was initially believed to have been killed by a bear.
Dustin Kjersem was attacked with an axe, block of wood, and screwdriver at Kjersem’s campsite in October 2024, according to prosecutors. An autopsy revealed multiple chop wounds, including to his skull. Abbey admitted to taking Kjersem’s guns, cooler, cellphones, and other belongings while concealing evidence. DNA found on a beer can inside the tent linked Abbey to the crime scene.
The victim’s girlfriend and another friend reported finding his body as a possible bear attack, but wildlife agents later confirmed no bear was in the area, leading to a homicide investigation.
Abbey claimed the killing was in self-defense after Kjersem threatened him, citing a felony record as a reason not to report the fight. He acknowledged taking a cooler of beer and guns from the crime scene and returning the next day to retrieve a beanie he believed he left there, along with two cellphones and items from Kjersem’s truck.
Authorities noted inconsistencies in his story, emphasizing multiple chop wounds in the attack. Abbey is scheduled to be sentenced on December 30. The defense attorney stated the team was disappointed but respected the jury’s decision, arguing self-defense claims would have led to an acquittal if believed.
