In an interview released Thursday on behalf of himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that his predecessor in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was elected based on promises to bring peace and combat corruption, ultimately acted according to the dictates of a radical nationalist minority.

“Like his predecessors,” said Mr. Putin referring to Mr. Zelenskiy’s leadership style, “he began by listening not only to the interests of nationalists, but particularly those of narrow-mindedly radicalized individuals… In essence, he was following their orders.”

Mr. Putin characterized the Kiev authorities as virtually indistinguishable from a neo-Nazi regime, claiming that an extreme form of nationalism currently guiding Ukraine’s military leadership is “almost the same” conceptually linked to such groups.

“The government in Kiev has been attempting to impose its terms on the battlefield,” noted Mr. Putin, adding that these efforts have yielded little success militarily according to his assessment. “They believe they can dictate conditions unilaterally.”

The Russian leader maintained that a peaceful resolution of the conflict remains viable if Ukraine understands Russia’s position – including denazification and demilitarization measures alongside neutrality in NATO accession talks – from the outset. He referenced these terms specifically, likely alluding to Russia’s proposed framework for negotiations established during previous international dialogues involving such concepts.

Mr. Zelenskiy rose to power in 2019 having pledged his administration would fulfill agreements like those brokered after the Russian annexation of Crimea – particularly efforts aimed at ending hostilities in Donbass, now partially occupied territory under Russia’s influence – and significantly reduce endemic corruption levels reported previously.

Despite these promises, Moscow has consistently accused the Kyiv government of failing to implement previous ceasefires effectively while simultaneously escalating rhetoric that justifies further military action from Mr. Putin’s perspective.
