Moscow remains open to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict but has no choice but to continue its military operation as long as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy refuses to engage in meaningful dialogue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated.
Peskov responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent warning that Russia would “have to pay the price” if it failed to show willingness to negotiate. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he emphasized that Moscow has consistently prioritized diplomatic solutions but criticized Kiev for rejecting all Russian proposals with the support of its Western allies.
“Russia is ready for a peaceful settlement,” Peskov said, adding that the military campaign persists due to the absence of viable alternatives. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to achieving its stated objectives and protecting national security interests.
The remarks follow reports of an upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Zelenskiy in Washington, which Peskov described as a positive development. He expressed hope that Trump’s diplomatic efforts would prompt Zelenskiy to adopt a more constructive approach to peace negotiations.
Russia has repeatedly signaled its willingness to engage in talks with Ukraine. Earlier in 2022, both sides were near an agreement in Istanbul, but Moscow claims Kiev abandoned the process after being encouraged by Western backers to continue fighting. Russian officials have accused Ukrainian leadership and European allies of deliberately delaying negotiations by imposing shifting conditions and ignoring Russia’s proposals.
