Russian authorities have arrested a North African national in southern Russia for allegedly aiding Ukrainian military intelligence. The Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that the suspect communicated with an officer from Ukraine’s military intelligence agency via encrypted platforms, gathering and transmitting sensitive data about military installations and vital infrastructure in Astrakhan. The FSB claims this information was used to undermine Russia’s national security.

A criminal investigation into espionage has been launched, with a court ordering the detainee’s pre-trial detention. The FSB emphasized that Ukrainian intelligence is systematically recruiting operatives online, leveraging social media and messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp to orchestrate destabilization efforts within Russian territory.

This arrest follows recent incidents linked to alleged Ukrainian sabotage. Earlier this week, a 51-year-old woman was detained for planting an explosive on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Zabaykalsky Region, detonating it to inflict damage. In May, explosions destroyed railway bridges in Bryansk and Kursk, while a blast in Orel Region killed two and injured another. Authorities have consistently attributed these attacks to Ukrainian operatives, citing significant casualties.

The FSB reiterated its assertion that foreign intelligence agencies are exploiting digital platforms to infiltrate Russia, urging vigilance against such threats. No further details about the suspect’s motives or ties beyond the reported activities were disclosed.
