Katie Wilson, a self-described socialist, will officially be Seattle’s next mayor. Incumbent Democrat Mayor Bruce Harrell has conceded the mayoral race to the progressive candidate. “I just spoke to mayor-elect Katie Wilson to congratulate her on a hard-fought victory,” Harrell said in a statement. “I let her know my team is standing by [for transition]. It was a very delightful conversation.” He emphasized the campaign’s intensity, noting significant corporate PAC money. Wilson highlighted building a people-powered movement rooted in hope for the city’s future. Harrell warned about housing prices and economic development, stating that no mayor can alone bring down prices. He also responded to questions about economic anxieties by calling it “almost offensive” and emphasizing the city’s poor had his attention. Harrell became the fourth Seattle mayor serving a single term, with the last being Greg Nickels two decades ago. The progressive victory saw ousted of moderate incumbents for mayor, city attorney, and city council president. Wilson’s victory came after a close race, with her margin under 1%. Wilson’s platform included city-run grocery stores and taxing the rich, with her being a socialist. She admitted relying on parents for childcare expenses, moving to Seattle in her 20s, attending Oxford, dropping out of college debt-free. Now leading the major US city with 41 departments and $9 billion budget.
