Gov. Greg Abbott has deployed approximately 200 Texas National Guard members to Illinois, where they will remain for at least 60 days to support federal agents in addressing illegal immigration and crime. The deployment follows clashes between anti-ICE protestors and agents in recent days. Pentagon officials confirmed the movement of troops, stating they are tasked with protecting federal functions, personnel, and property amid ongoing tensions.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker opposed the deployment, urging Abbott to withdraw the Texas National Guard members. Abbott rejected the request, asserting his authority to mobilize forces for federal protection. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the action as “illegal” and “unconstitutional,” citing a lack of prior notice and raising concerns about its legality. Illinois and Chicago have filed lawsuits to block the deployment, arguing it violates constitutional principles.
The National Guard troops are currently stationed at an Army Reserve Training Center in Elwood, IL, approximately 55 miles from Chicago. Local officials emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to legal protocols before any further actions are taken.
