The Kennedy family is in mourning following the death of Joan Kennedy, the first wife of Senator Ted Kennedy. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her Boston home on October 8 at the age of 89.

Joan Kennedy, born Virginia Joan Bennett, was married to Ted Kennedy for 22 years, a period marked by personal struggles and public scrutiny. The couple met in 1957 when Ted’s older sister Jean introduced them during their time as students at Manhattanville College. They wed in November 1958 in Bronxville, New York, and had three children: Kara, Ted Jr., and Patrick.

Throughout her marriage, Joan faced challenges stemming from Ted Kennedy’s controversial behavior, which strained their relationship. She eventually divorced him in 1983 but remained associated with his legacy as the long-suffering wife of the youngest Kennedy son.

A talented classical pianist and holder of a master’s degree in education, Joan later became an advocate for sobriety after battling alcoholism and depression. Her son Ted Kennedy Jr. reflected on her resilience, praising her courage in confronting personal struggles.

Joan is survived by her two sons, nine grandchildren, and numerous nieces. Her daughter Kara passed away in 2011. The details of her life and legacy continue to be remembered by family and friends.
