President Trump confirmed a meeting with New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is in the works, stating, “We’ll work something out,” and emphasizing his desire for the city to thrive.
Trump expressed his intent to meet with Mamdani in Washington, D.C., following months of deriding the candidate as “my little communist” and warning of New York City’s potential ruin should Mamdani be elected mayor. The president also threatened to cut off federal funding if Mamdani does not cooperate, highlighting the strained relationship between the White House and the Big Apple.
Mamdani confirmed he reached out to Trump for a meeting, stating, “My team reached out to the White House to fulfill a commitment I made to New Yorkers over the course of this campaign, a commitment that showed a willingness to meet with anyone and everyone, so long as it was to the benefit of the eight and a half million people that call the city their home.”
Trump’s acknowledgment of the possibility of a sitdown came as he prepared to return to Washington after a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The president plans to address issues such as the “affordability crisis,” SNAP benefits, and ICE enforcement with Mamdani, signaling potential collaboration despite previous conflicts.
The standoff between the city and the White House remains unresolved, with Trump’s previous statements indicating a strong opposition to Mamdani’s leadership, while Mamdani’s campaign promises to curb Trump’s immigration agenda at every turn.
