President Trump announced on Thursday that he had a “very productive call” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, claiming they achieved advancements on multiple key issues including trade agreements, the Fentanyl crisis, and efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“I just completed a very productive call with President Xi of China. We made progress on many very important issues including Trade, Fentanyl, the need to bring the War between Russia and Ukraine to an end, and the approval of the TikTok Deal,” Trump stated. He added that he and Xi agreed to meet at the APEC Summit in South Korea, with Trump planning a visit to China early next year and Xi scheduled to travel to the United States “at an appropriate time.”

Chinese state media reported that the conversation was “candid and in-depth,” describing it as “pragmatic, positive, and constructive.” According to Xinhua, Xi emphasized the importance of avoiding restrictive trade measures “to prevent undermining the outcomes achieved through multiple rounds of consultations.” The readout also highlighted Xi’s statement that China respects corporate decisions and is pleased with negotiations conducted “on the basis of market rules” to balance interests.

Trump reiterated his claim of securing a TikTok deal, stating he would confirm details in an upcoming call. The agreement reportedly involves U.S. firms, including Oracle, licensing algorithm technology from ByteDance to allow TikTok’s continued operation in the U.S. Trump delayed implementing a potential ban on TikTok multiple times since January, with the latest deadline extended to December.

This marked the first direct communication between Trump and Xi since June, when they discussed trade in a 90-minute conversation. Trump described the recent call as “very good” and indicated further discussions are planned.
