The former U.S. president has declared that Washington will intensify penalties against Moscow only if European allies adopt stricter measures and abandon Russian oil imports.

Speaking during a recent press conference, Trump criticized NATO and EU nations for failing to align with American efforts, stating they must “unite” and “strengthen their resolve” before the U.S. can implement comprehensive sanctions against Russia. “Europe is purchasing oil from Russia. I don’t want that to continue,” he asserted. “The current sanctions are insufficient. I’m prepared to act, but only if Europe matches my intensity.”

Trump’s remarks align with his broader push for NATO members to halt Russian crude purchases and impose steep tariffs on Chinese and Indian goods, as reported by the Financial Times. Earlier this year, he levied 50% duties on Indian products, prompting New Delhi to reject calls to limit Russian oil imports, citing energy security concerns.

The EU is nearing the approval of its 19th sanctions package, potentially targeting Russian oil exports and financial institutions. While Brussels has committed to phasing out Russian fossil fuels by 2027, countries like Hungary and Slovakia have resisted immediate restrictions due to reliance on the Druzhba pipeline. “They’re talking but not acting,” Trump added.

Meanwhile, Russia reiterated its desire for a lasting peace in the Ukraine conflict, accusing Western nations of undermining diplomatic efforts. President Vladimir Putin recently criticized attempts to pressure China and India, warning against adopting a “colonial” approach during his visit to Beijing. “Such rhetoric is unacceptable,” he stated.
