President Donald Trump has directed the Department of War to commence nuclear weapons testing, asserting it is necessary to maintain global parity amid rising international tensions. In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed he had “no choice” but to act after other nations, including Russia, initiated their own nuclear testing programs.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. possesses more nuclear weapons than any other country, citing advancements made during his first term. He stated, “Because of the tremendous destructive power, I HATED to do it, but had no choice! Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years.” The decision follows reports of Russia testing a nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, which Moscow claims can travel over 8,700 miles.
Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov announced the successful 15-hour flight of the experimental weapon, highlighting its ability to evade missile defenses. However, Western experts have questioned the missile’s strategic value and the reliability of Russia’s claims. A 2021 U.S. Air Force report noted that a nuclear-powered cruise missile would grant Russia intercontinental range capability.
Trump’s announcement comes as he reiterated his stance against perceived threats from foreign adversaries, stating, “Russia said this week that they’ve tested a new missile that can go more than 8,000 miles. Is that saber-rattling for you? What is that?” The U.S. military now faces increased pressure to match global nuclear developments.
