President Donald Trump predicted during a Cabinet meeting that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will retire ahead of a potential primary challenge from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, citing concerns over Schumer’s political viability.
Trump told reporters Thursday that Schumer “can’t beat anybody” and suggested the senator would step down to avoid losing in a primary race against AOC, who has been speculated to run for the Senate. The remarks came as Trump clashed with Democratic leaders over a continuing government shutdown, which he accused Senate Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and others of prolonging.
The president noted that while some Democrats, like Ocasio-Cortez, have expressed openness to negotiations, Schumer “is afraid” of facing the progressive firebrand. “Right now, I don’t think he can beat anybody,” Trump said. “I would say he’ll retire before he loses in a primary.”
Schumer’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, reports indicate Ocasio-Cortez is exploring potential runs for Senate or presidential office in 2028, which could create a generational showdown with Schumer, who is set to face re-election that year. The congresswoman has expanded her campaign efforts across New York and built connections with former aides of Senator Bernie Sanders.
Ocasio-Cortez has not finalized her plans but has been positioning herself for broader political ambitions through town halls and increased online engagement.
