A U.S. marshal and an undocumented immigrant sustained injuries during an immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles. Federal officers were attempting to arrest an individual deemed illegal by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) when gunfire occurred.
According to DHS, the immigrant—who had previously escaped custody—attempted to evade arrest by ramming a law enforcement vehicle. Officers fired defensive shots, striking the immigrant in the elbow. A ricocheting bullet injured a U.S. marshal. Both the immigrant and the officer were hospitalized, with the marshal’s condition reported as stable.
The FBI is investigating the incident, which occurred near Los Angeles’ Fashion District. Protesters reportedly confronted hospital staff while the individuals received treatment. DHS attributed the violence to “sanctuary politicians” and activists who encourage resistance against immigration enforcement, citing a surge in assaults on officers.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called for a congressional inquiry into alleged unlawful detentions by federal agents, as local officials condemned the raids for inciting fear and disrupting businesses.
