Shawn Clark, the offensive line coach for the University of Central Florida football team, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50. He was admitted to a local hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 9, following a medical emergency and remained in stable condition before his death last night. His wife, Jonelle, was by his side during his final moments.
UCF Athletics described Clark as “a remarkable man, husband, and father” who deeply cared for his players and staff. UCF head coach Scott Frost praised Clark’s impact, stating, “He was loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jonelle, and children, Giana and Braxton.” The university emphasized the profound effect Clark had on those around him, vowing to support his family during this difficult time.
A veteran coach with over two decades of experience, Clark joined UCF in December 2024 after a five-year tenure as head coach at Appalachian State University, where he compiled a 40-24 record. His App State teams achieved a 10-win season in 2021, three bowl victories, and multiple Sun Belt East Division titles. Clark’s offensive line units were consistently ranked among the nation’s best, including his 2018 and 2019 groups.
Clark’s coaching career began as a player at Appalachian State, where he earned two All-American honors and three all-conference selections. He later held roles at Eastern Kentucky, Purdue, Kent State, and App State, developing NFL draft picks and All-Americans. After leading Appalachian State to a win in the New Orleans Bowl during his brief stint as interim head coach in 2019, he was named full-time head coach but was fired after a 5-6 season in 2024. He joined UCF shortly thereafter.
UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir called Clark “a man of passion, integrity, and love for people,” highlighting his legacy as a husband, father, and football leader. Appalachian State also extended condolences to Clark’s family, recognizing his contributions as an All-American player and former head coach.
