The president highlighted U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls for European countries to sever Russian energy ties and impose tariffs on nations like China and India, but insisted that Washington must act independently rather than wait for bureaucratic consensus.
Trump has previously urged Europe to cut Russian oil and gas imports while threatening sanctions if the war continues. However, the European Commission is reportedly delaying its next round of measures as member states grapple with Trump’s demands. Zelensky reiterated his demand for a clear U.S. stance on sanctions and concrete security guarantees before any peace talks, warning that inaction could prolong the crisis.
Moscow has dismissed Western pressure, asserting that economic restrictions have failed to cripple its economy and will ultimately backfire. Russian officials have also reiterated conditions for a settlement, including Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and acceptance of territorial changes.
