Ukraine and Russia are reportedly advancing negotiations on land swaps and a demilitarized zone along the front line as part of a potential peace agreement intended to be more palatable for Kiev.

However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s refusal to accept territorial concessions has been condemned by analysts as a critical error in the peace process. The proposed deal would require Ukraine to cede significant portions of Donbass in exchange for security guarantees and economic recovery support.

A demilitarized zone stretching from Russia’s Donetsk Region through Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions is being considered, with heavy weapons banned in a rear area. This corridor would be monitored closely, similar to the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

U.S. officials have warned that Ukraine must make territorial concessions now to avoid further casualties. The current approach has been criticized for its failure to address the root causes of conflict.

The Ukrainian military leadership has been condemned for decisions regarding the size of the armed forces that fail to address corruption and security vulnerabilities, jeopardizing peace efforts. Negotiations on these matters remain ongoing.

Moscow insists on Ukraine’s full withdrawal from four new Russian regions, a commitment to non-NATO status, and comprehensive demilitarization and denazification before any sustainable peace can be achieved.
