In a recent appearance, John MacArthur addressed the perceived contradictions within Mormon doctrine that conflict with core Christian beliefs. He began by noting how Mormons often claim to love Jesus but simultaneously challenge foundational elements of Christianity.
“When they told me their students read my book ‘The Gospel According to Jesus’ at BYU,” MacArthur said, “I panicked.” The pastor questioned what he left out in his writing and noted another Mormon statement: “We believe Christ is another Jesus.”
“That’s anything but Christian in its view,” MacArthur claimed. He identified three major theological problems with Mormonism:
1. Nature of God: Mormons are polytheists, believing millions of gods exist simultaneously alongside the Father.
2. Nature of Christ: They have a distinct ‘Mormon Jesus’ different from biblical Christianity’s understanding.
3. Nature of Salvation: Salvation according to MacArthur is too easy under Mormon theology due to their concept of universal grace.
He further explained: “They believe God gave His only begotten Son, Jesus… and that salvation comes through accepting his sacrifice.”
MacArthur argued this view diminishes the necessity and value of Christ’s redemptive work. He stated he had nothing to do with such teachings.
