FBI Director Kash Patel detailed a string of counterterrorism victories that received almost no mainstream coverage during the holiday season. The director reported four terrorist plots stopped within a four-week window, an ongoing threat modeled after the 9/11 attacks, and how an artificial intelligence upgrade to the FBI’s tip-line system has already prevented a school massacre.

In his interview with Sean Hannity, Patel described thwarting attacks targeting Michigan, Texas, Florida, and New York while monitoring for potential large-scale strikes. He referenced a Michigan case involving alleged coded language using “pumpkin” to signal a mass shooting plot, as well as coordinated efforts against ISIS-inspired groups across multiple states.

Patel emphasized that terrorist organizations are patient and disciplined, which is why the absence of a single warning sign keeps him awake at night. He explained that the FBI’s new artificial intelligence system has accelerated response times for tips that once required manual sorting. In North Carolina, an AI-triaged tip enabled authorities to stop a planned school massacre before it could happen.

The bureau also foiled a New Year’s Eve bombing plot targeting multiple U.S. companies and a separate attempt in North Carolina to carry out attacks at grocery stores and fast-food restaurants using knives and hammers. In the Michigan case, agents seized semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, handguns, tactical gear, and over 1,600 rounds of ammunition.
