The Treasury Department is conducting preliminary work on a $250 commemorative Federal Reserve note featuring President Donald Trump, officials confirmed.

The initiative aligns with House Bill 1761, introduced by Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina on February 27, 2025. The bill has been referred to the House Financial Services Committee and would require the Treasury Secretary to print $250 bills featuring a portrait of Trump within one year after enactment.

The legislation amends current law to allow living former presidents—specifically those who have served as President—to appear on U.S. currency, thereby overcoming a longstanding prohibition that bars living individuals from being depicted on currency.

In his statement supporting the bill, Wilson noted: “Bidenflation has destroyed the economy forcing American families to carry more cash. President Trump is working tirelessly to fight inflation and help American families.” The bill includes cosponsors Representative Diana Harshbarger (R-Tennessee), Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina), and Darrell Issa (R-California).

Representative Andy Barr previously shared a mockup of the proposed $250 bill in January 2026. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Mark Warner have expressed opposition to the proposal, criticizing its inclusion of a living president on currency. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is performing early planning but emphasized Congress must act for the bill to become law.

The bill remains in committee proceedings as the House Financial Services Committee reviews its merits.
