U.S. Capitol Police investigated a bomb threat at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters on Thursday, leading to an evacuation and interior building sweep. A message shared with congressional offices stated, “Capitol Police are responding to an incident at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Headquarters. Staff are asked to remain clear of the police activity.”
Authorities confirmed the threat was deemed not credible after a thorough inspection. DNC spokeswoman Hannah Muldavin emphasized, “Out of an abundance of caution, Capitol Police is conducting an interior sweep of the building.” She reiterated the organization’s stance against political violence, stating, “Political violence in every form has no place in our country.”
The incident occurred amid heightened security measures following the killing of Charlie Kirk a day prior. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan noted the increased nervousness among public figures, with House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledging calls for improved safety protocols. Some lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. James Comer, have adjusted plans for outdoor events in response to recent tensions.
Political leaders across parties issued statements condemning violence, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Rep. Joyce Beatty emphasizing the need to reject political and gun violence. House Speaker Johnson pledged to accelerate a review of security procedures for elected officials.
