Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has initiated a new operation called “Operation Metro Surge” targeting undocumented immigrants, specifically focusing on those with criminal records or deportation orders. The raids began this week in the Twin Cities area.

According to reports, ICE agents conducted operations that resulted in at least 12 individuals being detained so far. Among them are Somali nationals who have been subject to scrutiny. Critics argue that these actions are part of a broader effort against immigrant communities and raise concerns about due process and community impact. For instance, one individual with seven felony convictions was apprehended during the operation.

Local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have voiced opposition, implementing measures such as barring ICE from using city-owned facilities for staging. Despite these actions, President Trump has criticized the mayor’s stance.

The targeted communities are facing significant backlash and protests against these enforcement activities.
